DEMONIC AFFAIRS

THE SCENT OF cinnamon and clove lingers in the air outside the ice cream shop. I hover in the doorway, searching my surroundings for signs of Malicevile. He must’ve spotted the werewolf the moment we entered the shop, and he took the opportunity of me leaving his side to go after the poor creature. I thought I was helping the werewolf by telling him to leave, but now I’m sure I just handed him to Malicevile on a leash.

I kick off my pesky heels and leave them on the sidewalk as I jog the best I can in my restricting dress to the end of the block where a set of stairs leads to the beach. I bet that’s the direction the boy went. It’d have been faster for him to change and run home as a wolf.

Bolting down the stairs two at a time, I reach the beach in seconds. The dark waves crash against the shore. White foam coats the sand, giving me a glowing trail along the beach. I suck in a deep breath of salty air, picking up the scent of cinnamon and something earthy, like damp dirt, which I know must be the werewolf. They have to be nearby.

A spark of light catches my eye in the distance, and an energy orb flies across the sand, sputtering out inches from a figure on the ground. I hike up my dress and start running as fast as I can. Bending my knees, I propel through the air, but it’s not easy having to land in the soft sand. It’s hard to get a quick start without pushing against a firm foundation.

Another ball of electricity flies through the air, the flash blinding me just as I’m about to hit the ground, and I lose my concentration. My feet slide in the sand, sending me tumbling. I spit out a mouthful of sand and push onto my hands and knees. I can’t let Malicevile take the poor werewolf. I just can’t.

“Stop!” I scream as I stagger, trying to get to my feet in the stupid dress. The scent of patchouli and amber sneaks up on me.

Strong arms wrap around me from behind, pulling me away. I thrash, elbowing Evan in the stomach. I spin to watch him fall to his knees, and I do the only thing I can think of to keep him away from me. He’ll try to stop me if I go after Malicevile. I’m surprised he didn’t attempt to grab me sooner. Scooping up a handful of sand, I throw it in Evan’s eyes.

“Malicevile! Leave him alone. I swear, if you hurt him, I’ll never give you the time of day again. You can bet on it,” I say, anger lining my words.

It’s enough to make my father stop in his tracks. He turns from the werewolf, who scrambles to his feet and starts running in the opposite direction.

“I’m willing to take my chance, Camilla,” my father says as he turns back to the fleeing werewolf.
